The Leader of the New Patriotic Party's Members of Parliament (MPs), Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused Speaker Alban Bagbin of betraying him on several occasions.
Mr Afenyo-Markin says out of the respect he has for Mr Bagbin, he has restrained himself from reacting in the Chamber despite being pushed a couple of times.
“I respect the Speaker a lot but since I became a Majority Leader, he has betrayed me on a number of occasions. Privately, we will have conversations but he will come to the chamber and do otherwise.
“My predecessor, Kyei-Mensah and former Minority (Leader), Haruna Iddrisu as well as Muntaka and others used to have banters with him but I have restrained myself from doing that. I decided that no matter what I will manage the situation but this thing was heart-breaking because I wanted to go to him but he avoided me and I don’t think it was fair,” he stated
However, the declaration of four parliamentary seats on Thursday, October 17, 2024, he said, was the last straw for him.
The Effutu MP said this in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM, stating all his attempts to make a case in the chamber proved futile.
“There were instances I engaged him on issues but he will come and do other things in the chamber but Thursday was another day I controlled myself because I didn’t want the Hansard to record me that I engaged the speaker in a banter. I tried to make my case in a civil way but he kept stopping and interjecting me. He has attitude that if you are not careful, he will get you off guard,” he noted.
