The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his strong opposition to LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana, asserting that such practices are contrary to the nation’s religious beliefs and cultural values.
His stance, he says reinforces the party’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s traditional norms.
During his Eastern Regional tour, Dr Bawumia addressed a gathering of clergy, traditional leaders, and stakeholders in Anyinam.
He emphasised that the teachings of both the Bible and the Quran, along with Ghana’s cultural heritage, do not condone LGBTQ+ activities.
He made the remarks at the commissioning of a newly constructed constituency office in Atewa East by the Member of Parliament, Abena Osei Asare.
The event brought together various leaders and community members who shared concerns about preserving Ghana’s moral and cultural foundations.
Dr Bawumia made it clear that under his leadership, the NPP would firmly resist any attempts to establish LGBTQ+ ideologies in the country.
He stressed that this position would be maintained despite any external pressures or potential costs associated with such resistance.
“Nananom [Chiefs], recently there have been some issues about the introduction of LGBTQ which advocates for same-sex marriages, that thing will never happen in this country, we won’t allow such to occur here in Ghana.”
“It is not in the Bible and Quran too, it is not also in our tradition, culture or values so we will stand firm and resist its introduction no matter the cost, we won’t agree for it to destroy our country,” he stated.
The flagbearer’s comments come at a time when the debate over LGBTQ+ rights continues to intensify in Ghana, with many calling for the protection of the country’s traditional and religious values against foreign influences.
