Deputy Head of Programmes of Sustainable Development Through AgriBiz at GIZ, Bashiru Fuseini, has reiterated their commitment to supporting women in the agricultural sector to improve yields and general agricultural sector production.
According to him, the impact of the recent dry spell in the country cannot be underestimated hence the need to support all players including women in their activities aimed at ensuring food security. He was speaking at the International Day of Rural Women celebration.
The International Day of Rural Women (IDRW) is celebrated annually to recognise the essential contributions of rural women in agriculture, food security, and rural development.
It highlights the vital role they play in food production, from farming to processing and distribution, while also addressing the unique challenges women face, such as limited access to resources and technology.
Speaking at this year’s celebration, Bashiru Fuseini said women contribute immensely to general agricultural production in the country, hence the need for increased support to cushion them.
Executive Director of Development Action Association, Lydia Sasu outlined the impact of galamsey activities on their yields.
The celebration also focused on fostering collaboration on sustainable agricultural technology, alleviating manual labor, and enhancing food production in Ghana.
The International Day of Rural Women which was themed “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All” provided an opportunity for collaboration between rural women, government officials, and stakeholders, ensuring the adoption of technologies and policies.
This year’s celebration is in partnership with key stakeholders and organisation including Gomoa East District Assembly, GIZ (Agribiz), UN Women, YARA, Food and Agriculture Organisation, Forestry Commission, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa and EGG.
