The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has recounted the hard times he went through in the past during a meeting with the creative sector on Wednesday, October 17, 2024.
While responding to a plea made by dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, on the need for Bawumia to find ways of helping young people on the streets, the Vice-President mentioned that because he had been in similar situations in the past, he empathised with such underprivileged people.
Speaking in pidgin English at the behest of Shatta Wale, Dr Bawumia said "Me I be farm worker before, by-day worker, I be taxi driver before, I be cleaner before, so I know how people dey suffer before," he said.
He also highlighted the humanitarian work he has been doing for people.
"What dey my heart be the people wey dey suffer for the country inside. E be ein dey my heart. I be patron of Leper's Aid Ghana. Me den lepers dey eat together because I dey wan help them. Also, I be patron of Mother Teresa's Soup Kitchen and we help the street children. So my heart dey the street inside. Dr Bawumia also added that with the help of digitalisation, the youth of today can navigate various life activities without being fleeced or exploited.
The meeting which took place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra had in attendance various stakeholders from the culture and creative industries.
After presentations of the NPP's achievements for the arts and what they intend to do if they win the forthcoming election, the creatives took turns to either ask questions or proffer ideas on what to do to make the industry better.
The New Patriotic Party has promised to provide tax incentives, travel protocol service, e-visa for visitors, and online streaming platforms, among others to people in Ghana's creative sector if they are voted into power in the December 2024 election.
