Former Ghana Football Association Vice President, George Afriyie, has expressed reservations about the decision to hand Mohammed Kudus the Black Stars captaincy in such a crucial moment.
Head coach Otto Addo announced just before the Sudan 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra that Mohammed Kudus would captain the team in the goalless draw.
Kudus took over the role in the absence of Thomas Partey, who missed the October international games because of a medical issue.
Jordan Ayew was next in line to captain the team in Partey's absence, but Kudus was announced as the stand-in captain.
Ghana needed to win both games against Sudan to boost their hopes of qualifying, but after a goalless draw and a loss, the team is now set to miss out on the tournament.
“I'm not convinced under what circumstance, where we have a Black Stars [captaincy] structure, where who is captain and the next in line [are defined], and I mean, in such a crucial moment, the captaincy was given to Kudus. There are so many things but we are not there,” Afriyie told Joy Sports.
Ghana sits third in Group F with two points from four games and is now on the verge of not qualifying for the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.
The Black Stars will be back in action in November in the final two games of the qualifiers against Niger and Angola.
