A group of small-scale miners have taken matters into their own hands, launching a series of attacks on illegal mining operators in the country.
The move is seen as a show of support for the government's efforts to clamp down on the illicit activity, which has been blamed for environmental degradation and loss of revenue.
The attacks have targeted several illegal mining sites in the Ashanti and Western regions, with the small-scale miners using their resources to dismantle equipment and disrupt operations.
According to them, the legal aspect of the mining business is no longer recognized due to illegal mining activities and must be a matter of concern to everyone.
Members made these statements in the Amansie West District when the Advocacy for Sustainable Mining group met with Zonal members to sensitize them about the need to engage in responsible Mining.
Mr. Joseph Mensah, who is the Amansie West Zonal Chairman of the Small Scale Miners Association on behalf of the members appealed to the government to continue repose confidence in them in fighting galamsey activities.
He noted that the group has set up a task force to clamp down on illegal miners especially those on the water bodies and forest reserves.
Mr. Mensah revealed that the Association is concerned about the negative impact of galamsey on their businesses.
“Illegal miners are making our work unpopular and difficult so they must be dealt with without any mercy for them,” Amankwa Anthony, a miner said.
The group, however, disagrees with a section of Ghanaians calling for a total ban on their activities claiming it will not help salvage the situation.
