Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to balance their legislative duties with their campaign efforts carefully.
Speaking during the 5th meeting of the Fourth session on Tuesday, October 15, Speaker Bagbin stressed the importance of MPs maintaining their commitment to parliamentary responsibilities, even as they focus on securing or retaining their seats in the upcoming elections.
Mr Bagbin acknowledged the intense demands that come with the campaign season, recognising the significant time, energy, and focus required of MPs during this period.
However, he cautioned against allowing these campaign activities to overshadow their core mandate as legislators, particularly at a time when urgent national issues require their attention.
The Speaker emphasised that while electoral campaigns are essential, MPs must not neglect their legislative duties.
He reminded them that their primary responsibility is to address pressing national concerns, and it is crucial to ensure that the work of Parliament continues uninterrupted.
Mr Bagbin made it clear that the legislative agenda in the weeks leading up to the election is of equal, if not greater, importance.
He called on MPs to strike a balance between their campaign commitments and the need to advance critical parliamentary work for the benefit of the nation.
“The legislative agenda ahead is weighty and we must approach it with the seriousness it demands. The Environmental Protection Bill, Parliamentary Service Bill, and Parliamentary Transition Bill, we must ensure that bills of a time-sensitive nature are scheduled for debate and decisions taken as soon as possible."
“It is understandable that the demands of campaigning will pull your time and energy. However, we must balance these demands with our legislative responsibilities.”
