A recent happening in my traditional area, Botoku has brought the Volta North Command of the Ghana Police Service into sheer disrepute.

I cannot help but describe the Ghana Police frontline in my jurisdiction as weak and corrupt in discharging their duties in the area and hence must sit up, especially as the country heads into the general elections.

On the day of the inauguration of the Botoku Traditional Council in the Volta Region based on LI 2409, some aggrieved residents decided to demonstrate, to stop the inauguration which is of the statute.

Their reason being that they were not in support of the provision of the Traditional Council after an injunction filed by their leaders was dismissed at the Ho High Court.

They splashed fecal matter on the premises of the Council and on the entrance doors and ceilings. It is disheartening to learn that the police stood and watched this unlawful act and allowed the perpetrators to walk away freely without arresting them.

In addition to that, the demonstrators broke hundreds of hired chairs in the presence of the Police Commanders. This act nearly led to a violent clash between well-meaning residents and the demonstrators who saw the act as unreasonable. The police intervened and negotiated with the demonstrators but failed to arrest them.

The Directors from the Ministry of Chieftaincy and the Registrar from the Volta Region House of Chiefs and their entourage lamented and described the incident as the most disappointing situation ever come across seeing the Police doing nothing about the situation and allowing those culprits to stop a statute event.

The residents have therefore clamored to provide security during the inauguration, indicating they would not need such corrupt police officers during the event.

I have noticed that the police cannot do their job because it is believed a highly profiled government official was behind this bad behavior led by Togbe Atakorah, Elikem Akortiakumah, Zikpuitor Addae Akortiakumah and many others.

I want to make a passionate appeal to the Inspector General of Police to call the Volta North Command to order and ensure they maintain law and order and not take sides in such situations.
