Former finance minister and South African Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni has died.
In a statement, the family says it is devastated by Mboweni’s passing.
According to the family, Mboweni passed away on Saturday after a short illness.
“The family is devastated by Governor Mboweni’s passing after a short illness. He passed away in hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday night surrounded by his loved ones.”
He served as South Africa’s finance minister between October 2018 to August 2021.
The former governor also served in former president Nelson Mandela’s cabinet as labour minister between 1994 and 1999.
The family has requested privacy and says further details will be released over the next few days.
