Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor says he cannot imagine “Ghana not qualifying” for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations after a dismal start to the campaign.
The team has picked up two points from a possible nine, following two stalemates against Niger and Sudan, and a defeat to Angola.
Ghana now sits third in Group F and can only guarantee qualification by winning all three of their remaining matches.
The Black Stars Sudan in the second leg on Tuesday, October 10, in Libya as they look to secure their first victory of the qualifiers.
"I can't imagine them [Ghana] not qualifying for AFCON. They will have to. It is possible; we have the men to do this job,” Akonnor said in an exclusive interview with JoySports.
“The short term is that we win the upcoming matches. We don't have any other choice than to win. That is something possible. If you can go to Mali to win convincingly, I think you can win against Sudan. Then, Angola compared to Mali is not a big deal. All we need now is to win.”
Akonnor coached the senior national team from January 2020 to September 2021.
He was dismissed by the GFA Executive Council after a disappointing run, losing four of ten matches, including a crucial 1-0 loss to South Africa that left the Black Stars in a precarious position for the 2022 World Cup qualification.
