A driver’s mate has been killed with three others injured in two separate accidents in Accra.
Both accidents occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, involving trucks transporting soft drinks and bananas respectively.
Assistant Division Officer(ADO) Alex King Nartey from the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the accidents in an interview on Adom FM.
ADO Nartey said the first accident occurred at Anyaa Last Stop during which the driver’s mate whose identity is yet to be established lost his life.
Preliminary investigations, he said has revealed that the truck was transporting soft drinks from Agyen Kotoku to Tarkwa and upon reaching Anyaa, a Pickup crossed it.
The driver in an attempt to avoid a crash swerved but climbed a nearby pavement, causing the truck to overturn and crashed the mate.
“We learnt it was the mate’s first day on the job. He is in his 30s. He was being rushed to the hospital in another truck but personnel from the Ambulance Service swiftly moved in an he was confirmed dead,” he said.
ADO Nartey stated that, bystanders were interested in rushing for the products than helping to safe the victims, a situation he described as worrying.
“Firefighters cooled the truck to avert any possible explosion due to heating and while we were concerned about the safety of bystanders, people were busily rushing for the drinks. Police and Fire personnel did our best to control the crowd but they outnumbered us,” he bemoaned.
For the second accident, it occurred on the Ofankor-Achimota stretch of the Pokuas-Accra Highway, where the three injuries were recorded.
He said the victims were the driver, his mate and a female passenger.
The truck also overturned on its side, blocking the main road.
However, he said investigations are underway to establish the cause of the second accident.
