Kufuor: Democracy Hub protesters who broke the law must be punished

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged that protesters who allegedly broke the law during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration in Accra be held accountable.

While he acknowledged the citizens' right to protest, he condemned the violent actions, including property damage and attacks on police officers, calling for justice to be served.

The demonstration, which resulted in significant property destruction and road blockages, has attracted widespread attention.

Kufuor, speaking in an interview with Angel FM, stressed that while protests are a democratic right, they must remain peaceful, and those who engage in unlawful activities should face consequences.

He particularly emphasised the need to hold those responsible for attacking law enforcement officers accountable.

The former President underscored that the rule of law must prevail to maintain public order and protect both the rights of protesters and the safety of police personnel.

He concluded by urging swift action from the authorities to ensure that justice is served, thereby upholding both the democratic right to protest and respect for the law.

“If you attack a police officer or take away their car key, you must face the law or be punished. We can’t let them go scot-free,” he insisted.
