Marketing and Sports Business Consultant, Magnus RexDanquah is in favour of renting out stadia for non-sport income, despite the criticism directed at the National Sports Authority (NSA) for the practice.
The NSA, responsible for maintaining state facilities, has faced significant scrutiny, including the dismissal of its Director General, Dodzie Numekevor, for overseeing the unfit state of various stadia.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium was rented out for a five-day 'Kumuyi' Church program in July, which left the pitch in poor condition and ultimately led to a ban by CAF after the Ghana-Angola clash in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
However, RexDanquah insists that generating revenue from other non-sport avenues is a step in the right direction but cautioned that there is a need for pitch covers to “cover and protect” the playing field.
"You need activities there [stadia] to make the non-sport income for the stadium. You should think of the money you will make because between matches, it is an empty space,” he told JoySports.
"Outside courses, symposiums so you need to open up to make the non-sport money that will keep the stadium running because there is definitely a cost.
"[User] you either cover it up or pay the cost of repair plus the inconvenience because the repair will take a bit of time so if there is a match, it means it has to go to another venue. You need that [pitch covers] to cover and protect the pitches.”
Renting out national stadiums - without pitch protection - has become the NSA's primary source of income.
However, the practice has proven counterproductive, as the facilities are often left in a deplorable state.
The Chairman of the NSA, Seth Panwum, has stated that the stadia will now be used exclusively for sporting activities until the authority acquires pitch covers.
