Marketing and Sports Business Consultant Magnus RexDanquah has revealed that the valuation of the Accra, Essipong, and Baba Yara stadia has "dropped by more than 40%" because those in charge "are not keeping them well”.
The facilities, which were used as venues for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations - where RexDanquah was Chief Operating Officer - were declared unfit for purpose as the nation scrambled for a home ground for the Black Stars’ 2025 AFCON qualifier against Sudan.
Though the Accra Sports Stadium was subsequently approved to host the upcoming match on October 10, concerns about the management of stadia by the National Sports Authority remain in the spotlight.
In an interview with JoySports, RexDanquah said: “There is one valuation I did of Accra, Essipong and Kumasi [stadia], you won’t believe it.”
“Within two-three years, the value of the stadia has dropped more than 40%. [Because] you are not keeping them well. There are some areas that we should have leased them out.
“I think the primary problem we have in Ghana is management of pitches. I think [National] Sports Authority (NSA) should have a system that the management could be seeded out and you have a clauses in - where you want to use for national events, the charges. There are aspects of commercialization of the pitches that they don't qualify to do that."
Meanwhile, the Baba Yara and Essipong stadia have been closed down for renovations works.
Renting out national stadiums has become the NSA's primary source of income, but the practice has proven counterproductive, as the facilities are often left in a deplorable state.
