The Founder of the National Interest Movement (NIM) Ghana, Dr Michael Abu Sakara Foster, has called for a re-evaluation of the criteria governing who can contest in Ghana's presidential elections.
According to him, although Ghana's multi-party system is a hallmark of its democracy, it should not come at the cost of quality and integrity in the electoral process.
Dr Foster argued that the current system allows for a lot of candidates, which can dilute the seriousness of presidential elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on October 4, he said, “We really must take a critical look at who we allow to contest for presidential elections and make sure that certain standards are adhered to. We cannot pride ourselves on having a multi-party election just because we allow anybody to contest for the election.”
According to him, specific standards should be set that candidates must meet to ensure that only qualified individuals can contest.
“So there should be some real standards to make sure that we do not reduce this to a level where every Tom, Dick, and Harry who has 100,000 can contest.”
According to him, these standards will not only elevate the quality of candidates but also enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
