The three-day #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow demonstration began on Thursday, October 3, in Accra.
The protest is aimed at demanding the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested during an anti-galamsey demonstration last week.
It also sought to raise awareness about the ongoing environmental destruction caused by illegal mining (galamsey) activities.
The march which started at Legon, Okponglo Traffic Light, continued to the Airport Traffic Light, then proceeded to the National Service Secretariat, the Electoral Commission Office, and Parliament, before concluding at Independence Square.
The protestors are expected to present a petition to the Attorney General to release the 53 remanded protesters.
Protesters, dressed in black, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Leaders, You’ve Failed Us,” “Tweeting Alone Won’t Solve the Galamsey Problem,” and “We’re Drinking Death & There’s No One to Save Us,” amongst others.
The Ghana Police Service provided security throughout the march, ensuring a peaceful and orderly demonstration.
