The Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Omane Boamah, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to address the persistent issues surrounding the voter’s register rather than merely reacting to criticisms.
Speaking at the IPAC meeting on Tuesday, October 1, he emphasised the need for the EC to implement substantial reforms instead of attempting to "mop up" the concerns raised by various stakeholders regarding the integrity of the register.
Dr Boamah likened the EC's approach to addressing the voter's register discrepancies to patching up a leaking roof without fixing the underlying issues.
He argued that the EC must take decisive action to resolve the problems highlighted by political parties, civil society organizations, and the public.
According to him, these measures are crucial for ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process as the nation heads towards the December elections.
He further criticised the EC for its lack of responsiveness to the demands for a comprehensive audit of the voter’s register, which many believe is necessary to ensure its accuracy.
Dr Boamah stressed that simply dismissing these concerns will not build public confidence in the electoral process and could lead to further distrust among the electorate.
"When your roof is leaking, you can decide to mop, keep mopping and keep mopping. Or you can decide to fix the leakage and then mop. What we have seen here is mopping," he stated.
