The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games has confirmed that $15 million was spent on food for 12,902 participants in the continental event.
According to the LOC, stakeholders, including athletes, team officials, technical officers, and volunteers, were fed four times a day.
Chairman for Parliament's Select Committee for Youth, Sports, and Tourism, Kobena Woyome, had claimed that the said amount was used to “feed athletes for 18 days.”
While the LOC acknowledged the expenditure, the body said that it was for “23 days.”
“The amount is $15m and they were to provide four meals; breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks per day for 23 days, not 15, 18, 10 figures that are being thrown about,” LOC Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“We are talking about the bare facts. Athletes, team officials, technical officers, media; local and foreign, security, volunteers, medical officers, transport team, VIPs, dignitaries [all benefited] etc.
Kwesi Mantey, Chairman of the Catering Sub-committee for the event, also revealed that 7.5 percent was deducted from the $15 million as withholding tax.
M and L Company Limited was the outfit contracted for the provision of food during the Games.
Meanwhile, the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, is expected to appear before Parliament for an overall breakdown of the Games' expenditure.
The African Games, which marked the nation’s first hosting rights, was held from March 8-23, 2024, during which Ghana won 69 medals
