The Jaman North Municipal Director of the Department of Agriculture, Victor Yao-Dablu, has underscored the need to constantly train Municipal and District Coordinators of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the country.
In an interview at Sampa, the municipal capital, Mr Yao-Dablu noted that it is crucial to train these coordinators to enhance the capacity of the participants for preventive and effective response to emergencies.
The coordinators, he said, must return to their various locations and be able to sensitise other stakeholders who will then be able to contribute meaningfully towards the prevention of disasters.
"The training workshops should be able to draw different stakeholder organisations from disaster management and specific emergency backgrounds as resource persons.
Experts must, therefore, be engaged to share their expert experience in a critical disaster risk reduction exercise,” he stated.
He stressed that the training of the coordinators must be a yearlong process intended to unearth the challenges of disaster management and risk reduction in Ghana.
Mr Yao-Dablu further suggested that education authorities should also introduce a course on disaster management for schools.
He stressed that if education is to prepare people for life, then issues such as natural and man-made hazards ought to be considered.
He added, "Every community is vulnerable to a greater extent or lesser extent to the threat of loss of life and property due to a disaster".
"And as we strive to contain and curb natural and artificial disasters in our communities and the nation, the municipal and district coordinators must receive new ideas to enable them to sensitise the citizenry on personal responsibility.
Both young and old should strictly adhere to the preventive measures in disaster issues," Mr Yao-Dablu said.
