The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has announced plans to extend maternity leave by an additional month if he wins the upcoming elections.
Currently, mothers are entitled to three months of leave after giving birth, which he believes is insufficient for the crucial early stages of parenting.
Speaking during the NDC women’s manifesto launch on September 30, he said, "By the fourth month, when a baby begins to wean, mothers often have to return to work."
"I will add an extra month to allow mothers to monitor their child’s development before resuming their professional responsibilities.”
Mr Mahama also proposed a week-long paternity leave for fathers, enabling them to assist mothers during this period.
However, he specified that fathers must provide proof of marriage to access this leave.
This policy is for legally married men, ensuring that both parents can take part in caring for the newborn. While mothers will receive four months of maternity leave, fathers will have a week of paternity leave to support their wives and bond with their child.”
