The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to reform the licensing regime for small-scale mining in Ghana, aiming to unlock the sector's potential to create approximately one million jobs.
He made this statement during a stakeholders’ durbar in Daboase, marking the beginning of his four-day tour of the Western Region.
Dr Bawumia emphasised the importance of small-scale mining, which has historically played a vital role in Ghana’s economy.
He pointed out that the sector accounted for 43% of total gold production in 2018 and 36% in 2019, underscoring its significant contribution to the nation’s resources.
His administration's proposed reforms aim to enhance the operational framework for small-scale miners, enabling them to work more efficiently and sustainably.
The durbar was part of a nationwide community outreach initiative designed to engage with citizens, listen to their concerns, and communicate his vision for development.
By connecting directly with the communities, Dr Bawumia seeks to foster a collaborative approach to governance that addresses the needs of Ghanaians.
In his remarks, Dr Bawumia expressed his commitment to leveraging the small-scale mining sector to boost employment and economic growth.
He underscored the NPP's dedication to creating an environment that supports the sector while ensuring responsible and sustainable mining practices.
“I want to reiterate that small-scale mining, when done properly, holds immense significance for our country’s economic development. In Ghana, small-scale mining accounts for 50% of our gold exports, underscoring its vital role.
"To ensure responsible and sustainable practices, I pledge to reform and regulate the sector if elected as president."
“I will Streamline Licensing by involving traditional authorities and local assemblies to simplify the licensing process, terminating at the Minerals Commission.
"Also Engaging the Geological Survey Authority to identify gold-rich areas, minimising environmental destruction," he vowed.
