Popular Ghanaian YouTuber, Wodemaya, has found himself at the centre of controversy following a comment he made on Facebook criticising the incumbent government over the arrest and detention of some 39 protestors.
Born Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon, Wodemaya’s Facebook post read “This is not the Ghana we know”.
In response to Wodemaya’s post, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, pointed out that a similar incident had occurred in Kenya, the home country of Wodemaya’s wife.
He backed his response by sharing a story published by Aljazeera about the arrest of some 270 Kenyan protestors.
"This happened in your wife's country, Kenya. The GH protestors were arrested for taking the law into their hands and creating inconvenience for road users".
In a reply to this post, Wodemaya said “I was definitely not expecting a wise response from you considering your cover photo.”
This reply sparked intense reactions from some members of the public and ignited debate on Facebook.
Wodemaya’s reply adding to the fact that Mr Ofosu Nkansah’s cover photo features the NPP flagbearer for election 2024 Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been widely interpreted as a direct attack on the NPP and its supporters.
The comment has since drawn criticism, with some viewing it as a condemnation of the political views of those aligned with the governing party.
Mr Ofosu Nkansah noted that based on the influencer's comment he has unfollowed him on social media.
The backlash has been swift, with some NPP loyalists taking to social media to express their discontent. Some are demanding an apology from Wodemaya, while others have dismissed his statement as a personal opinion.
In defence of their political affiliation, supporters have accused the YouTuber of using his platform to insult and belittle a significant portion of the Ghanaian population.
