Ten African countries are to participate in the 2024 Africa Diaspora Debate to be held in Accra, Ghana.
The debate is centered on discussing economic issues Africans are faced with to help provide possible solutions to tackle challenges.
The event has been held in different countries, but this year it is being hosted in Ghana, considering how Africans especially Ghanaians are caught up in an economic crisis
Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, Professor Kenneth A. Newby, a Senior Assistant Professor and Director of Forensics (Speech and Debate Program) explained why they needed to organise the event in Ghana.
“In history, Kwame Nkrumah had very important writings and works in these areas. So we thought, what better place to have this important dialogue than in Ghana,” he said.
In addition, the Executive Director of Speech Forces Organisation, Eric Asamoah Awuah, said that since Ghana is the first sub-Saharan country to gain independence, it signifies that Ghana qualifies to host such an event.
“Historically, Ghana has been a champion in the whole African Renaissance, with Kwame Nkrumah leading the country to be the first to gain independence. All those significances are there, and so Ghana is obviously prime for this,” Mr. Awuah said.
All contestants will be speaking on the topic ‘A free market economy or a planned economy is the best for African people.’ According to Prof. Kenneth, the topic was carefully chosen to challenge the contenders and equip them to be critical thinkers in helping their countries.
Applications are open, and interested universities can reach out and fill out a form for their representatives to participate in the debate. Lectures have commenced prior to the event on Monday, September 30 at the University of Ghana campus.
