The Finance Ministry has responded to the circulation of a letter concerning Ghana's ongoing negotiations with Trafigura, a global commodities trading company.
The letter, which surfaced on social media on September 24, 2024, has sparked public discussions, with some interpreting it as a sign of the government's inaction on a pending settlement agreement.
The Ministry, however, has refuted these claims, clarifying that it has already made the necessary arrangements to fulfil its financial obligations to Trafigura as part of a negotiated settlement.
According to the Ministry, the letter referenced ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the matter and should not be misconstrued as government negligence.
"The Ministry of Finance wishes to state that we have made the necessary arrangements to pay off the outstanding claims agreed with Trafigura after several rounds of negotiations. We are, therefore, surprised at the circulation of this letter on social media," the statement read.
This development comes after months of negotiations between the Government of Ghana and Trafigura to settle outstanding claims related to a contractual agreement between the two parties.
Trafigura, a multinational commodity trading company, has been a significant player in Ghana's fuel and energy sector.
However, the settlement in question pertains to a financial dispute that has required careful negotiation to ensure a fair resolution.
The Finance Ministry reassured the public that the government remains committed to settling the claims and bringing the matter to a close promptly.
“The Government of Ghana remains committed to honouring its obligations under the Settlement Agreement with Trafigura with the view to bringing this matter to closure,” the statement emphasized.
The Ministry also expressed surprise over the leak of the letter, noting that the publicized document was part of ongoing discussions and not indicative of any government inaction.
As the government navigates this settlement, it has urged the public and the media to avoid jumping to conclusions based on incomplete information and has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the issue with Trafigura in line with the agreed terms.
