The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) is expected to hold an emergency meeting later today to discuss the aftermath and impact of the fire that occurred last Wednesday.
Felix Sobreh, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, revealed this to Joy News after leading a team of assembly members to assess the situation, gather firsthand information, and sympathise with the affected victims.
“This is of great concern to us. Upon hearing about the incident, I believe it’s only right for us to collectively assess what has happened,” he said.
“If there are any decisions that need to be made, we can address them immediately. Clearly, a lot of people are in distress.”
Sobreh highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that hundreds of people have been displaced, many of whom are school-age children.
“If this issue is not addressed promptly, it could have a significant impact on their education.”
He also emphasised the role of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in such situations but pointed out that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly must play its part in supporting NADMO’s efforts.
“It’s a devastating situation and must not be taken lightly. There are discrepancies in the number of affected persons, but once we have accurate figures, it will help in our planning.
"The Chief Executive, Yohane Amarh Ashitey, has already visited the scene, which shows the seriousness of the situation.”
The fire, which broke out last Wednesday, destroyed approximately 500 structures and properties.
It required the combined efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Police, Electricity Company of Ghana, NADMO, political figures, and other stakeholders to manage the emergency.
