The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Omane Boamah, has raised concerns about the theft of Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC).
Dr. Boamah questioned whether the missing BVD kits were part of a broader criminal enterprise.
This development follows the theft of the EC's BVD kits, which sparked widespread concern about election security.
The police have arrested a suspect found in possession of one of the stolen BVD kits.
Speaking during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders, he expressed suspicion about the timing of the theft, which happened under CCTV surveillance.
He further suggested that it might be connected to the EC’s refusal to allow an independent forensic audit of the voter register.
"The Biometric Verification Device (BVD) kits that got stolen, could it be a product of that criminal enterprise because those BVR laptops got stolen under CCTV surveillance," he said on September 23, 2024.
He went on to describe the incident as "deliberate layered irresponsibility," pointing out that the security at the EC involves multiple layers that are not immediately visible to the public.
“The layers of security at the EC is beyond what you can see.”
The EC has already assured the general public that a stolen BVD cannot jeopardise the integrity of the 2024 Elections.
