The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Gender, Women, Children, and Social Protection Committee, in collaboration with the party’s Women’s Wing in the Ledzokuku Constituency, has intensified preparations for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
At a capacity-building session held at the Apostolic Church in Tsuibleo, Teshie, Accra, members were equipped with key campaign strategies aimed at securing victory for NDC Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama and the party's parliamentary candidate, Ben Ayiku.
Ledzokuku has historically been a battleground constituency, with its voters rarely reelecting a Member of Parliament (MP) after their first term.
However, the NDC aims to break this trend by retaining the seat, currently held by Ben Ayiku, who unseated NPP's Nii Okoe Boye in the 2020 elections.
The training session, which took place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, was designed to prepare NDC women organizers for an effective door-to-door campaign.
The focus was on grassroots mobilization, voter education, and ensuring a strong turnout at the polls. Topics included voter registration, strategies from the NDC's 2024 Resetting Ghana Manifesto, and outreach techniques that resonate with local communities.
Key NDC Policies Highlighted
Several speakers who addressed the gathering spoke about the importance of the upcoming elections.
Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, a Human Rights Lawyer and Secretary to the 2024 NDC Manifesto, stressed the need to vote for Mahama, highlighting the party's commitment to women's empowerment through initiatives like the National Women’s Bank.
Dr. Sodzi Sodzi Tettey, a medical doctor and member of the committee, focused on the party's health policies, including Mahama's pledge to provide free primary healthcare and improved maternal care. He also discussed the Mahama Care plan, which promises dialysis support for Ghanaians and investments in healthcare infrastructure.
Support for Market Women and Fishing Communities
Hajia Jamilatu Ibrahim, from the NDC's Gender, Children, and Social Protection team, addressed market women, outlining the party's Market Enhancement Project. This initiative will offer microfinance programs and resources aimed at boosting market women's businesses, with new markets to be constructed in six regions.
Naa Korklu Afotey spoke on the party's policies concerning fishing communities, with a focus on fair distribution of premix fuel and providing subsidized wire mesh for women in the industry.
Commitment to Women’s Leadership
Former Ledzokuku MP Sena Okity-Duah and Constituency Women Organizer Hajia Latifa urged women to take on leadership roles in the 2024 NDC campaign. They acknowledged the critical role the Women’s Wing plays in grassroots mobilization, expressing confidence in their ability to drive the party’s message home.
As the December elections draw nearer, the NDC Women’s Wing in Ledzokuku is ready to mobilize and secure victory for Mahama and Ayiku, ensuring their campaign reaches every household.
