Oliver Barker-Vormawor arrested over Democracy Hub protest

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the leader of the Democracy Hub, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the recent protests organised by the group in Accra.

The protests, which resulted in roadblocks and the obstruction of traffic at key intersections, led to heightened tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement.

Barker-Vormawor, a key figure in the movement, was taken into custody after the police announced that it was on a manhunt for him.

Already, some 42 persons were arrested at Sunday's protest and are expected to be put before the court.

The third day of the protest today, Monday was uneventful as the streets were almost empty despite heavy police presence.

However, two protestors who turned up with placards were arrested.

Mr Baker-Vormawor is a known activist who sheds light on issues of national importance.

The protest in question was to draw the government's attention to the devastating impact of illegal mining and the need for urgent action.

This is not the first time he has been arrested by the state for an act deemed unlawful in his activism.

The Democracy Hub protests, aimed at drawing attention to the country's economic situation and other governance issues, saw several protesters arrested earlier for engaging in acts the police deemed unlawful.

Mr Barker-Vormawor had initially evaded capture, leading to a manhunt by the police. His arrest brings a significant turn in the events surrounding the protests, which have drawn national attention.

According to a police statement, Barker-Vormawor is being held for his alleged involvement in unlawful actions, including inciting public disorder and leading the group’s blockade of major roads.

The police have stated that the actions of the protesters, under Mr Barker-Vormawor’s leadership, caused severe inconvenience to commuters and disrupted the city's daily activities.
