The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North in the Volta Region, Edem Agbana, has called on the Peace Council and other civil society organisations to actively ensure that Ghana has a credible voter’s register ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, September 17, Mr Agbana criticised these bodies for their perceived silence on the ongoing concerns raised by the NDC regarding the accuracy of the electoral roll.
Mr Agbana accused the Peace Council and similar organisations of being hypocritical, stating that their current inaction contradicts their supposed mandate of safeguarding the country’s democracy.
He emphasised the importance of a transparent and credible electoral process, stressing that it is essential for the peace and stability of Ghana.
He said ignoring such issues could lead to tension in the upcoming elections.
He further noted that the NDC has identified several issues with the current voter's register, including illegal transfers and bloating, which undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Mr Agbana urged these civil society groups to prioritise the integrity of the electoral roll and support calls for a forensic audit to address these concerns.
"In all of this, the people I am most disappointed in are the Peace Council and those clergymen calling for peace. Peace is an outcome of many processes and they must be calling for a credible register and not only asking us to sign any peace pact," he said.
