The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC).
He described it as a "fruitless venture" and an "unnecessary move".
Speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse on September 17, 2024, Nana Boakye explained that the EC is an independent body established by law with the authority to audit the voter register, making the NDC's demand for an independent audit redundant.

“For me and the NPP, this is a fruitless venture. It is an unnecessary move,” he said.

He acknowledged that mistakes can happen, referencing an incident in Pusiga where unauthorised voter transfers occurred, and the EC suspended the presiding officer responsible.
However, he argued that the NDC’s broad claims of over 200,000 illegal transfers should be supported by evidence since the claim is quite severe.

“Bring evidence you say no. How can a political party behave in such a manner?" he asked.

He asserted that the NPP will fiercely oppose any efforts to compromise the independence of the EC, and while he noted that the EC can independently choose to audit the voter register, he rejected the idea of the NDC's call for an external independent audit.
The NDC held a protest on September 17, involving thousands of NDC members and supporters across all 16 regions of Ghana.
Their main demand is for the EC to conduct a forensic audit of the voters register ahead of the 2024 elections, which the EC has rejected as unnecessary.
Many others have called the protests premature because the EC is engaged in cleaning the register after the mandatory public exhibition.
