Mohammed Salisu is set to achieve a significant milestone when AS Monaco take to the UEFA Champions League this season.
For the Ghana international, the tournament will be his first appearance in Europe's topmost competition. The central defender is likely to make his debut against Barcelona on Wednesday.
The Ghanaian defender sees this fixture as a crucial test, especially given Monaco's unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season.
"Yeah, I think this will be my debut in the Champions League and it's an important game for the team and for me as well so we need to focus on the game," Salisu said in an exclusive interview with Flashscore.
The meeting against Barcelona will not be the first for Salisu as the Ghanaian has come up against the Blaugrana club on several occasions during his time in Spain with Real Valladolid. Salisu was also part of the Monaco team that stunned Barcelona with a 3-0 victory in the pre-season Gamper Trophy.
However, the landscape has shifted dramatically since that pre-season clash. Barcelona has seen a change in fortune as they have won every game and currently sit top of La Liga. This resurgence presents a formidable challenge for Salisu and his Monaco teammates.
Despite Barcelona's current form, Salisu is optimistic, drawing from his recent experience against the Spanish side.
"Yeah it wasn't an easy game but we won and you know how they play and you know how they have good players up front; dangerous, so you just need to know how to go with everything we have like we played last time," he stated.
While expressing optimism, Salisu also appreciates the quality of Barcelona's team and maintains belief in the ability of Monaco to challenge at the highest level.
The two sides will face off on Thursday as the new format of the Champions League kicks off this week.
