Ghanaian actor, Ama K. Abebrese, has shared her opinion concerning the challenges actors face within and outside the industry.

She told Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on the channel’s late afternoon show, Changes, that acting requires resilience due to the hassles they go through to get a movie role.

“I hear ‘I want to act’ all the time. Being an actor is one of the most disappointing things you can be. It doesn’t matter what part of the world you’re in. Let’s say that you’ve auditioned for something you think you’ve done so great, and sometimes you can go to your first, second, or third; they can call you back like four times, and by the fourth time you think you’ve started cashing the check, knowing you’ve got the role, and then you don’t get it. So, it builds you up and pushes you down. So, you need to have a level of tough skin because it gets to a point where you start taking it personal,” she said.

The actress further stated that she has been to more auditions than the number of movies she has been featured in since the beginning of her career. She recounted how she lost over twenty roles she auditioned for the past year despite her experience.

But she never gives up, although it is usually a difficult and painful encounter, admitting that it’s part of the industry. Instead, it helps to sharpen her skills and bounce back stronger. It also motivates her to persist in attending auditions as soon as she is informed about a project.

“If I didn’t get it, it just meant sometimes it’s not for me and you; there are times when you find out who got the role, and then you now understand why you were not given the role,” she further noted.

Over the years she has been in the creative industry, the actress indicated that she has only appeared in about twenty films but is happy with that because the majority of the movies have been impactful and gained traction. She highlighted that her focus is on the quality of the movies rather than the quantity.

Ama K. Abebrese has starred in ‘Beast of No Nation,’ which she said auditioned for the role. She also featured in other award-winning local and international movies, including Sinking Sands, Double-Cross, and Azali, among others.
