The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has urged disillusioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to vote for him in the upcoming elections.
He argued that abstaining from voting would not benefit the country's democracy.
Mr Mahama suggested that a shift to opposition would allow the NPP to address and heal from what he described as the “family and friends” governance that has characterised the party’s rule.
He believes this transition is crucial for the party to rectify its internal issues.
During a community engagement as part of the second phase of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mr Mahama emphasised that the NPP’s current governance model has been problematic.
He asserted that a change in leadership is necessary for the party to recover and realign with democratic values.
“I have many friends in the NPP and I know that they themselves are disappointed in the performance of their government. So many of them I have met, have said no, we are not going to vote, we are not happy with what is happening. But I beg them, we all know that this NPP that is in government is not the NPP you and I know.
“We have seen [John Agyekum] Kufuor as leader of the NPP before. It was not the same as what is happening today. So we know that it is a small family and friends that have hijacked their party."
“So they shouldn’t say they won’t vote. They should vote for NDC so that it will help them to take the party to opposition. Then they will sack that family and friends people away and take their party back," he stated.
