President Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated Efua Ghartey on her historic election as the first female president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
In his message, the president hailed her remarkable achievement, describing it as a significant step forward for gender equality in the legal field.
Efua Ghartey, a highly experienced lawyer, was chosen by her peers to lead the association, marking a historic first for women in the GBA’s leadership.
Her election has been widely celebrated, with many acknowledging her role in breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated professions.
In a congratulatory message shared on social media, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in Ghartey’s leadership abilities and ability to guide the GBA to new heights.
He noted that her victory is significant as it coincides with the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, reinforcing the nation’s progress toward gender equality.
The president also highlighted the broader significance of Ghartey’s election, stating that it would inspire more women to pursue leadership roles, both within the legal profession and beyond.
He emphasised that her success is a testament to perseverance and dedication, encouraging others to follow in her footsteps.
Efua Ghartey’s election is seen as a landmark moment for the GBA, with many anticipating her leadership will bring positive change and further strengthen the association’s role in upholding justice in Ghana.

Mrs. Ghartey’s determination and perseverance have finally been rewarded as she becomes the first female National President of the Bar Council after three attempts."

Legal practitioner, Efua Ghartey has been elected as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association.
This took place during the GBA election at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Efua Gartey garnered 1,208 while Kwadzo Dzakpasu secured 1,060 votes.
Her two previous attempts to lead the Association ended in a narrow loss to Tony Forson, the immediate past president of the GBA, and Yaw Boafo, the current national president, by thin margins of 67 and 65 votes, respectively.
