Founder of Kwanpa Band, Andrew Asah Nkansah has attributed the band’s popularity to Joy Prime TV channel.
According to Andrew, even though the band existed for a while, they did not gain public recognition until they got the opportunity to perform on Joy Prime TV in 2017.
He made this revelation while speaking to Irene Adubea Aning on the Career Trail program.
He recounted that most of the Christmas songs available were in a foreign context, so they picked a few, changed the lyrics to suit the Ghanaian setting, and then performed the songs on different media platforms.
"So it was 2017 Christmas, we worked on a Christmas song because we said to ourselves that the Christmas songs that existed were in the foreign context; and so let’s rework them and bring them to the local Ghanaian context and give it back to the people.
"So we selected jingle bells, we selected twelve days of Christmas and then we reworked those songs to fit the Ghanaian context. We did the song in 2017 and we had TV interviews on different media platforms," he explained.
Despite having the opportunity to perform on various media outlets, the founder revealed that their performance went viral after performing on Joy Prime’s ‘2nite’ TV program hosted by Andrew Adote.
"We went to Andrew Adote’s show on Joy Prime and then after the whole thing, I had to chase the producer for the recording. So it was that recording that later caught fire. So if you google ‘Kwanpa Christmas song’, you will realize that majority of the videos that will pop up in 2017/2018 have the Joy Prime logo,’ he further elaborated.
Andrew disclosed that they received several gigs following their viral success, including the opportunity to perform at the MTN Festival of Nine Lessons and Carol in 2018.
"That was how we were launched into the mainstream and we had some attention," he concluded.
