Nigeria's John Gabriel and Treasure Coason emerged as champions in the professional categories of the fifth edition of PruRide, a cycling competition which took place at Independence Square on Sunday, September 1, 2024.
The event, which was part of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana's 10th anniversary attracted over 500 cyclists, both professional and amateur.
Gabriel and Coason, who competed in the male and female categories respectively, took home GHS 15,000 and GHS 10,000 in cash prizes, along with medals, trophies, and certificates for their victories.
In the amateur races, Reginald Amond won the men's competition, while Femice triumphed in the women's race. Both amateur winners were awarded GHS 3,000, along with medals, certificates, and trophies.
Emmanuel Hammond, Head of Sustainability at Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, expressed his satisfaction with the event, noting its success in promoting a healthy lifestyle, which is central to the company's mission of being "partners of every life and protectors of every future."
"I think this year’s event has gone better than we anticipated," Hammond said.
"We've always had people come from other countries to compete, but this year our brothers and sisters from Nigeria really represented. This year's PruRide has been really thrilling," he noted.
He extended a challenge to cyclists across West Africa to participate in next year’s competition, emphasising the importance of community involvement in promoting cycling as a way to stay active and fit.
"We want to challenge our Ghanaian cyclists to train harder. Let's keep the cup here in Ghana," he admonished.
"We really hope that the community at large embraces cycling and everybody gets involved to stay active and to stay fit. That's why we're doing this anyway”
The Cycling Federation of Ghana also expressed gratitude to Prudential for their ongoing support in promoting the sport among Ghanaians.
The event was supported by the Ghana Police Service, Decathlon, Carbon AV, Sonotech Medical Center, Knoxxi Health, and JoySports.
