Renowned legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata has cautioned aspirants in the upcoming December 7 elections against running solely for their selfish interests.
According to him, the electorates are frustrated about the current economic situation and would not forgive individuals who are only seeking power to amass wealth.
The legal luminary made the comments on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 when he delivered the keynote address at the 14th Leadership Dialogue organised by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), a think tank, with support from Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES-Ghana).
The Leadership Dialogue Series is the flagship civic education platform of CSJ, a left-of-centre think tank. For years, the Leadership Dialogue has sought to nurture mass political participation and patriotic values through stimulating discussions with experts and prominent national leaders.
"The stakes now are too high. Ghana is in a state of severe crises, the people of Ghana whose future is at stake will not forgive those who seek power for their own personal aggrandisement,” he stated.
He criticised the current state of affairs, suggesting that the bar has been set low and that aspiring leaders must aim much higher if they are to be fit for the task ahead.
Mr Tsikata also urged those aspiring to lead to demonstrate a genuine commitment to addressing the numerous challenges facing the nation.
He stressed the need for selfless leaders who do not view national resources as their personal inheritance, but rather as individuals who identify with the ordinary citizen and are dedicated to harnessing the nation's resources for the benefit of all.
"We need leaders who have faith in the people, who will harness the power of the people and the God-given resources of our land to rebuild the nation," he added.
