Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr Randy Abbey, says there are no negotiations with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to become broadcast rights holders of the Ghana Premier League.
The state-owned broadcaster has made attempts in the past to become rights holders of the country's top flight. Their last attempt saw them miss out on the rights to StarTimes in 2019.
The GFA on January 8, 2019, named StarTimes as the television rights holder of the GPL and the MTN FA Cup. The long-term deal came to an end following the completion of the 2023/2024 season.
According to Randy Abbey, talks between the GFA and StarTimes seem to be progressing over a renewal while adding GBC has not been given TV rights.
"I am not aware of anything with GBC. The only thing I am aware of is GBC writing to the GFA requesting for rights to run radio commentary...," he said when quizzed about reports of the state-owned broadcaster being given TV rights.
“They [StarTimes] are yet to honour, so the contract is ended and there are outstanding issues from the previous one. We’ve been engaging."
Abbey also highlighted the FA’s quest “to sort out things and move forward” with contract negotiations with the broadcasting giants.
The new Ghana Premier League season is set to commence on September 6.
