John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a bold plan to establish Farmer Service Centres in every district across the country to support farmers with modern agricultural technologies and equipment.
This forms part of NDC's strategy to modernise Ghana's agricultural sector.
He made this commitment during the NDC's manifesto launch in Winneba on Saturday,
Mahama emphasized that these Farmer Service Centres would be pivotal in transforming agriculture by providing farmers with access to the latest farming technologies, equipment, and inputs. This initiative is designed to make farming more efficient and productive, ultimately enhancing food security and creating jobs.
He noted that the establishment of these centres would play a crucial role in reducing food inflation and lowering the high cost of living, aligning with the NDC’s broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda.
As part of the party's agricultural strategy, Mahama also outlined plans to roll out a "Feed Ghana Programme" aimed at boosting food production, ensuring food security, and supplying raw materials to industries.
The programme is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s agricultural output, benefiting both farmers and consumers.
Additionally, Mahama announced the creation of Farm Banks within designated agricultural zones.
These banks will provide farmers with easier access to land and irrigation facilities, facilitating large-scale farming and encouraging young people to pursue careers in agriculture.
