The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has highlighted the strong economic foundation the party left for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when it handed over power in 2016.
Reflecting on the state of the economy at the time the NDC was handing over, he asserted that, the transition was marked by several key indicators that pointed to a sound and stable economic environment.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s manifesto at Winneba, he accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the government of gross mismanagement of Ghana’s economy; adding that it has now been left in shambles after nearly eight years of NPP governance.

“When we were leaving office in 2016, we delivered to our friends in the NPP a sound economy that was marked by sustainable public debt, with a debt-to-GDP ratio that stood at 55.6 percent. There was also a stable credit rating of B-, a low budget deficit of 6.1 percent, and a declining inflation rate that stood around 15 percent,” he said on August 24.
The NDC further detailed that the economy they handed over included a currency depreciation rate of about 9.6 percent.
“We handed over to them a very strong manufacturing sector. We handed over to them two massive oil fields, and we handed over to them a cocoa sector that was thriving,” he added.
He, however, noted that upon assuming power, the NPP misled Ghanaians about the state of the economy they inherited.
“In the eight years that we were in office, these are some of the things we left behind for our friends. Even though they came to office and the first thing they did was to tell the country that we left them a nation in ruins, a country in a mess, the truth is, if you look into the records, many governments would actually be happy to find the foundation we left behind.”
