Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo, has raised concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's ability and credibility in combating corruption.
His comments come after Dr Bawumia promised to tackle corruption in the NPP’s election 2024 manifesto.
In an interview on Joy News' Upfront with Raymond Acquah, the former Auditor General challenged Dr Bawumia to prove his commitment by being transparent about the substantial funding for his campaign.
“The track record that he wants us to look at, can he tell us that about 80 million Ghana cedis which was used for the primaries. Can he tell us where it came from? He should have made that known to us, that as a vice president, he doesn’t even get 50,000 cedis a month. So for eight years, he would not make more than 10 million. He should have told us that apart from my salary, I have these sources, my father left these, and I have investments which brought about the eighty-something million which I used for my party funding. We would have clapped for him,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, Mary Awelana Addah, criticised the NPP’s anti-corruption proposals, arguing that they are not comprehensive enough.
According to her, the manifesto failed to address several key issues that civil society organisations have raised.
“A manifesto which came with 260 pages, I was expecting that at least, we will have some dynamic or specific strategic interventions that will show how it will be done, but they are just statements that have been made. If you want to fight corruption, you need to show us that I am not corruptible. What are some of the indicators of that incorruptibility that you want to bring on board.”
