The Western Region is set to receive 110 pieces of road improvement equipment under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) to address road infrastructure challenges.
The equipment includes bulldozers, wheel loaders, concrete mixers, motor graders, and more.
Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, speaking at the launch of the construction equipment at Apremdo near Takoradi, stated that the President's vision for DRIP extends beyond road construction.
"DRIP is about creating a connected and thriving Ghana, where every district, no matter how remote, feels the impact of progress. This initiative will ensure progress and prosperity at the local level," he stated.
Darko-Mensah highlighted that DRIP is the largest investment ever made in the Local Government Sector, with nearly 1,500 pieces of equipment provided to MMDAs across the country.
"This is a clear demonstration of the government's commitment to improving local infrastructure by giving Local Authorities the tools they need to effect meaningful change in their communities," he added.
The DRIP project is expected to create nearly 8,000 direct jobs, stimulate local economic development, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve general service delivery nationwide.
The Western Regional Co-ordinating Council will closely monitor the effective utilization of this equipment, with adequate preparations made for maintenance and fueling to ensure smooth implementation.
Regarding the training of operators and drivers, 30 participants from each MMDA in the region will receive training on using the machines, totalling 420 trained operators and drivers.
Ignatius Assah Mensah, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Mpohor District, praised the government's initiative, noting its transformative impact on the district.
"This will bring a total transformation in the district," he said, explaining that the district had no tarred roads until recently.
The new equipment, he added, will make transportation easier, especially for traders, by improving road accessibility.
