A violent clash between the youth of Wenchi Zongo and Nkonsia in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region has resulted in the death of one person and the burning of five motorbikes.
The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Alhassan Mohammed, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the Wenchii Methodist Hospital.
Two others were also injured in the altercation, with one, Ayuuba Adamu, still receiving treatment at the hospital.
According to Adamu, the conflict began on Saturday (17 August) during an event in Nkonsia known as “Agado Night.” He recounted that while at the event, his phone was snatched by an unidentified person.
After chasing the alleged thief to a nearby house, Adamu claims he was attacked by a group of people who beat him with sticks until he was too weak to defend himself.
“I was urinating when someone took my phone. I saw him and chased him, but he ran into a house. When I followed him there, he called for help, and a group of people started beating me. I was too weak to fight back, so I ran to the roadside to find my friends,” he said.
Adamu’s friends, angered by the assault and the theft, followed him to the house. It was during this confrontation that Alhassan Mohammed was fatally stabbed. Another man, who attempted to intervene, was also injured with a stab wound to his armpit.
Adamu added that the group from Wenchi Zongo, who had come to the event on motorbikes, found their vehicles set ablaze during the chaos.
The incident was reported to the Wenchi Police, and Adamu accompanied officers to the scene.
He expressed hope that the perpetrators would be apprehended and justice served.
The Senior Enrolled Nurse at the Emergency and Accident Unit of Wenchi Methodist Hospital, Anthony, confirmed the incident, indicating that three victims were brought to the facility at approximately 5:30 a.m. Sunday (18 August).
The Wenchi Police have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.
