The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to safeguard and enhance the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes if elected President.
Speaking at the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr Bawumia emphasized the pivotal role these educational initiatives play in the nation’s development and the future of its youth.
He stressed that his administration would be committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education, regardless of their financial background.
"The Free SHS and TVET programmes are the cornerstones of our education sector. My administration will continue to invest in and elevate these initiatives to provide better opportunities for our young people," Dr. Bawumia stated.
He highlighted several upcoming measures aimed at strengthening these programmes, including increased funding, improved infrastructure, and the introduction of new curricula tailored to meet the demands of the modern job market.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to expand access to TVET programmes, ensuring that more students benefit from vocational training and acquire the skills needed for various industries.
“We will protect and enhance the Free SHS/TVET, which is truly transforming lives and changing life outcomes for millions,” he said.
He further noted, “Since we started Free SHS/TVET, enrolment has increased by 83%. We are building the foundation for a well-educated, prosperous society. With Free SHS/TVET, we have achieved gender parity. More girls are getting secondary education, and the impact will be positive for society. We will recruit more teachers at all levels, with improved conditions of service.”
