Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has announced plans to introduce a new legislative framework which is an Ageing Act aimed at enhancing the care and protection of the elderly if he wins the presidential elections.
Under this proposed legislation, Dr Bawumia plans to establish a comprehensive geriatric care training programme to ensure that caregivers are well-prepared to meet the demands of elder care.
According to the flagbearer, he will implement policies to develop and support a range of services, including home care, nursing homes, and rehabilitation facilities.
He said this during the NPP manifesto launch on August 18, 2024.
"I'll implement policies on the establishment of homecare, nursing homes and rehabilitation services, including assisted living and old-age community living."
Additionally, he promised to create a new social assistance scheme to support elders who are currently not covered by existing programmes.
“I will create elder-specific social assistance schemes to cover those not presently covered under existing programmes such as LEAP," he said.
The flagbearer also pledged to expand Ghana's economy to tap into the talents and resourcefulness of every Ghanaian.
The Vice President said he would achieve this by creating a clear foundation which would make it easy for every Ghanaian to earn a living to be able to afford their various needs irrespective of political affiliation or ethnicity.
