Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has called on ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), District Chief Executives (DCEs), and other leaders to help rebuild Mepe and other flood-affected areas.
He stressed that any challenge affecting even a single community in the Volta Region poses a risk to the safety, security, and stability of the entire region.
This was contained in a speech read on his behalf during the 68th Aƒenorto Festival.
The Speaker emphasised the urgent need for stakeholders to actively engage in the rebuilding of Mepe and other affected communities and underscored that the assistance required from these leaders is not a luxury but a necessity, especially in times of crisis.
He also reminded the Volta River Authority (VRA) to implement carefully considered and safer technical options in any future spillage exercises.
The Speaker highlighted the importance of ensuring that such actions bring blessings and comfort to the people of Mepe and its surrounding areas, rather than hardship and suffering.
As the nation approaches the 2024 general elections, Mr Bagbin urged all citizens to fulfill their civic duties with a commitment to peace and unity, reinforcing the importance of national stability during this period.
In a speech by the Executive Chairman of Oswal Investments Group, Humphrey A. Williams, which was read by Mr Francis Kpolu, the devastating impact of recent floods on Mepe was acknowledged.
Mr Williams described the floods as a source of unimaginable challenges, disrupting lives and properties.
However, he also highlighted how the disaster brought out the best in the people of Mepe, as the community came together to rebuild and recover, embodying the true spirit of Aƒenorto—a time when sons and daughters return home to renew bonds and reaffirm their commitment to each other.
He reminded the gathering that the journey towards recovery is far from over, emphasizing the importance of completing key projects such as the Mepe Health Centre, including the theater, male and female wards, the Mepe Development Community Center, and the TVET institutions and Astroturf.
He stressed that these projects are vital for the future of Mepe, and continued support is essential to turn these visions into reality.
“This festival is more than a celebration,” Williams remarked. “It is a reflection of our resilience and a pledge to the future. Let us take pride in the progress we have made and commit to overcoming any challenges ahead with the same unity and determination that brought us this far.”
He urged all sons and daughters of Mepe, both near and far, to contribute to the development projects, so that a sustainable and prosperous future for the Mepe Traditional Area can be built.
The Aƒenorto Festival celebrated annually, serves as a significant occasion for the people of Mepe to reflect on their history, celebrate their culture, and plan for the future.
This year’s event, marked by both reflection and resolve, reaffirmed the community’s commitment to overcoming adversity and building a brighter future for generations to come.
