Former President and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has disclosed his intention to implement a Volta-Oti Economic Corridor Policy targeted at the economic emancipation of the Volta and Oti regions.
John Mahama said the policy is tailored to improve economic activities and create opportunities for the teeming youth in the two regions to take advantage of to improve their livelihoods.
He made this known during a media interaction in Ho, with selected media personnel in the Volta Region.
Mr. Mahama said that his government would improve road infrastructure stretching from Aflao to Jasikan to enhance commerce and trade.
He promised to upgrade the Ho-Aflao road to a first-class status and complete the Hohoe-Jasikan stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road to enable traders travel between the two regions with ease.
He further indicated that modern markets would be constructed in Aflao, Hohoe, and Jasikan to promote economic activities along the Eastern Corridor.
Mr. Mahama also outlined investing in Agriculture along the corridor to create jobs and opportunities for the youth, to enable them to engage in economic activities to amass wealth.
He said his government would leverage the Volta River to rollout an extensive irrigation programme along the banks to increase crop production.
"We will expand trade, rice, millet production in these regions so that our youths can get jobs to do", he said.
He hinted that his proposed National Apprenticeship Programme would be rolledout extensively in the Volta and Oti Regions to help the youth acquire skills to support their livelihoods.
