The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his strong commitment to ensuring peace as Ghana heads towards the 2024 general elections.
Addressing the 31st Biennial General Council meeting of the Assemblies of God Church at the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo, Upper East Region, Mr Mahama stressed the importance of a peaceful electoral process.
During his speech, Mr Mahama reassured the gathering that his actions and those of his party would not contribute to any form of violence during the upcoming polls.
He made it clear that, under no circumstances, would he or the NDC resort to violence to achieve political power.
Mr Mahama further emphasised that the welfare and lives of Ghanaians must never be compromised in the pursuit of political ambitions. He underscored the need for all political actors to prioritize peace and stability during the elections.
In addition, Mr. Mahama called on all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and citizens, to work collectively to maintain a peaceful atmosphere throughout the electoral process.
He reminded everyone that the integrity of the elections and the safety of Ghanaians should be paramount.
The former president concluded by expressing his hope for a smooth and orderly election, urging all involved to adhere to democratic principles and ensure that the 2024 elections are conducted peacefully and fairly.
“As we go into another election, there is often a general sense of apprehension that something will go wrong. As a member of your church, I can assure you and pledge that I am a person of peace, and if there is any violence, it won’t come from me. I will do everything to ensure that Ghana remains peaceful,” he pledged.
“If you resort to violence, it is the same people you are coming to govern. And so, I don’t think that even a single drop of any Ghanaian blood is worth political power or coming into office,” he added.
