Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Boniface Gambila, is displeased with recent comments made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer regarding the relationship between Burkina Faso and Ghana.
John Mahama criticised President Akufo-Addo for allegedly damaging this relationship, leading to what he describes as "diplomatic tension," despite the President's efforts to address the issue.
During a media interaction in the Upper East Region, Mahama emphasised the importance of maintaining good relations with neighboring countries, particularly in the context of addressing terror threats from the Sahel region.
Mr Gambila believes these comments were inappropriate and might only incite the people of Burkina Faso against Ghana.
Commenting on the matter on Joy News’ the Pulse on August 7, he said “I wonder if the former president is putting his knowledge and skills into play. What he is doing is like trying to incite Burkinabe against Ghana. That is what he is doing, which is very bad. A former president, you are telling as that your colleague open his month wide”
He explained that President Akufo-Addo only commented on the issue to attain resources and support from the United States to aid Burkina Faso in the fight against terrorism.
The Ambassador stated that this was evident in the support the country received, so for Mr Mahama to tell a different story might complicate matters.
“When President Nana Addo went to the US meeting, it was clear later at the end the intent of his message was important.
“The intent of the message at hat time, was to mobilise resources for the people and the government of Burkinabe is to fight terrorism effectively and I can tell you the contributions of President Akufo- Addo and the Accra initiative has pushed this government forward in their fight against terrorism irrespective of any other help they are getting,” he added.
He stressed that President Akufo-Addo helped Burkina Faso adding that Mahama's comments must be disregarded.
