Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised that a John Mahama-led administration in 2025 will revitalise the fishing industry to ensure its benefits reach all stakeholders.
She criticised the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Akufo-Addo and flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for implementing policies that have negatively impacted the sector.
Speaking to NDC supporters in Moree, located in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency of the Central Region on Thursday, as part of her four-day campaign tour, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the severe challenges faced by artisanal fisherfolks.
She pointed out that the high costs of outboard motors and premix fuel have been major obstacles affecting their livelihoods.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured that the next NDC government would address these issues by implementing more supportive policies for the fishing industry.
"Meanwhile when the NDC was in power, fishermen were able to afford the outboard motors and premix fuel because they were subsidized and these were all due to good policies the government put in place," she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the NDC's successful track record in making the fishing industry profitable.
She promised that the party would decentralise and subsidise the supply of premix fuel and outboard motors to support artisanal fisherfolks.
She urged voters to support John Dramani Mahama in the December 7 general elections to ensure the creation of more opportunities and improvements in the fishery sector.
